The White House Correspondents’ Association just axed its big comedy act for this year’s dinner, and conservatives are smirking at the backpedal. They’d tapped Amber Ruffin to headline, but after Trump’s team called her out, the group caved fast.
Ruffin, a lefty comedian from Seth Meyers’ late-night echo chamber, was set to take the stage next month. The WHCA yanked her spot on Saturday, claiming the dinner’s about honoring journalists, not stirring the pot with “divisive” politics.
This comes after the White House torched the association for picking Ruffin in the first place. She’s been trashing Trump nonstop—lately mocking his push to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

Taylor Budowich, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, didn’t mince words on X. “No accountability at WHCA, just a cop out statement—pathetic!” he posted Saturday, slamming Ruffin as a hate-spewing hack.
The association’s head, Eugene Daniels, had bragged last month about Ruffin’s “unique talents” fitting today’s climate. Guess that climate got too hot when Trump’s crew pushed back.
Tensions have been simmering between the WHCA and the administration. Trump’s team banned the Associated Press from some gigs and took over the press pool reins, leaving the media whining.
Ruffin’s out, but no word yet on whether Trump will even show up to the dinner. Past events had big names like Jon Stewart and Jay Leno—folks who could jab without sounding like bitter loons.
Those on the right see this as a win—proof the woke crowd blinks when you hit back. The WHCA might’ve thought they’d sneak Ruffin in, but Trump’s not playing their game.
