In 2022, Rep. Dan Crenshaw's (R-TX) campaign committee was fined $42,000 for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal contributions, the American Journal reports.

This story, which is two-years old, has recently resurfaced after a few large accounts reposted the story. Dan Crenshaw replied to these accounts on 𝕏 which brought down a fresh wave of criticism against the congressman who is largely disliked by republicans for his pro-war stance and insider trading.

Josh Dunlap reported on the FEC story from 2022, and suggested this was just one of the many 'ethical scandals' Crenshaw has been involved in. Crenshaw recently came under fire for his remarks regarding a ban on insider trading for congress members.

Dan Crenshaw responded to Josh Dunlap, suggesting the story was "a total lie" and that Dunlap was a "bottom feeder." He went on to write, "If you sad little trolls are gonna come after me, Christmas or not, at least have the balls to disagree with me on real things."

Another account called Texas Patriot also posted the story, calling Crenshaw "scum" and telling his followers to primary the congressman. Crenshaw responded, "Gotta love someone who knowingly bears false witness [...] yeah, you might want to delete this one pal."

Interestingly, the original post was community noted with the offical FEC documents and new articles which reported on this story. Here's what the note said, "It's been reported, and FEC records confirm, that in Dec 2022 Crenshaw's campaign entered a conciliation agreement to pay a $42000 fine for "knowingly accept[ing] $223,460.26 in apparent excessive and prohibited contributions for the 2020 primary and general elections."

According to the FEC, Crenshaw's campaign admitted to receiving the contributions and did pay the fine that was issued. Many people in the comments were pointing this out and posting the documents.

In his last post, Crenshaw responded to a post from an account called Catturd™, who also commented on the story, saying "This is completely made up. Knowingly spreading slander isn't a good look."

Again, Crenshaw's post was community noted and referenced the various documents which references this case. "Truth is a complete defense to libel/slander," read part of the community note.

Crenshaw's post has received some brutal replies, mostly from prominent right-wing accounts. The Red Headed Libertarian wrote, "Why would the FEC lie like this, Dan?" posting a screenshot of an email between the FEC and Crenshaw's attorney. You can read the full letter below.

Valentina Gomez also weighed in, commenting, "Boy, all you do is betray Navy Seals, send money to Ukraine and lie to the American people. Traitor." Owen Shroyer from the Infowars wrote, "You're lucky there's no dislike button on this app." And the Hodgetwins wrote, "Just to be clear, you are full of shit Dan."

Crenshaw did further clarify his side of the story, "To be clear, this story was from years ago. You're lying by implying we solicited illegal contributions. People sent in donations over the limit which just means we have to go through the painstaking effort of writing every single one of them a refund check. It takes forever and is extremely tedious. Happens all the time in campaigns."

Despite the clarification, people were not buying the explanation and continued to ridicule the congressman. Michael Malice, another prominent right-wing voice, poked fun at Crenshaw, writing, "Did they take your testicles when they took your eye? You tweet like a hysterical female."
