Over the weekend (Nov 16), Denmark's Victoria Kjær Theilvig was crowned Miss Universe 2024. The pageant was held in Mexico City this year, and it's the first time a contestant from Denmark has won.
Right-wing commentators on 𝕏 were thrilled by the decision, declaring that "woke is over." Eva Vlaardingerbroek, wrote, "Wow. An actual European, blonde, blue eyed woman won Miss Universe. That’s legal again? The tides are truly turning."
The winner of Miss Universe caught Donald Trump Jr.'s attention, he posted a video of Theilvig saying, "Biological & objectively attractive women are allowed to win beauty pageants again." Even Elon Musk responded, posting a meme with the headline, "Breaking: Internet Stunned After an Attractive Biological Female Human of Healthy Weight Wins Miss Universe Pageant."
In reaction to Trump Jr's comment, one user on 𝕏 wrote, "There has never been a trans miss universe so i dont get these comments." This is true, while transgenders have been allowed to compete in Miss Universe, there has never been a transgender winner. And the last time a white woman won Miss Universe was back in 2016, when Miss France won.
People online seem to be excited about this victory since beauty standards have for, too long, been governed by woke ideology that has pedestalled plus-sized models, transgenders, and people from diverse backgrounds over the traditional white woman.
For example, an Iranian-born woman won Miss Germany this year, many people took issue that she wasn't objectively "attractive" or German. The current Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Valerie Kollé, is a transgender woman. And at a recent Victoria's Secret show, two transgender models took the stage.
These changes in the beauty industry are why many people, like Musk and Trump Jr., are happy that a white biological woman has finally been pushed to the front. But this one instance doesn't necessarily indicate a shift, after all, Miss Universe is still owned by Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, who is a transgender and promotes transgender models.
