The Morgan coin has an interesting history; 1921 was the last year the Morgan was minted. The Morgan is the last coin design from the 19th century to be produced.

The Morgan was not that popular in the 19th century. It basically was invented by Congress for the politically powerful silver mining industry. 1904 was expected to be the last year it was minted; however, during WWI the British government issued more Silver Certificates in India than in actual Silver. The British became worried that India would revolt. This would have impacted the alignment of the Allied forces if Britain had to make peace with Germany due to tensions with India.

In an effort to replenish their Silver supply and to prevent the Indian revolt; the British government turned to the United States to sell them silver. The “Silverite” faction of the US Congress refused to allow the melting of the existing Silver dollars. Eventually, it was agreed that every Silver dollar melted would be replaced after the war.

In order to replace the 270 million silver dollars that were melted; the “1918 Pittman Act” was passed to require the U.S. Mint to buy silver at a rate of $1 per ounce. However, the price of Silver remained above $1 per ounce which resulted in the miners selling on the open market rather than to the US mint. Until 1920, when the price of silver dropped which made it more profitable to sell to the US mint.

The 1918 Pittman Act also known as “deal with the silver devil” had come due. The government was once again buying silver for more than the market price. The price of silver continued to drop to a low of 53 cents in March of 1921. To back the paper silver certificates that circulated the Silver dollars were stored in Treasury Department vault.

SIZING:

It is recommended that you get the size of your finger prior to ordering so that the ring will fit properly. You want the size to be large enough that it will pass over your knuckle but not too large that it can easily fall off. The rings made from 1 oz and $1 coins are quite beefy.

If your ring does not fit, or over time the size of your finger changes, or if the ring is passed down; we offer free resizing anytime for any reason. Just contact us and we will work with you to get your ring resized for proper fit.
